Island hopping

It is Chinese New Year and we slip lines and head out of the river anchoring a few hours later at the normally crowded Railay Beach.  There is almost nobody there.  A few rock climbers and that is it.  The limestone formations here are amazing and for the first time in a long time we have crystal clear water.  So it is over the side for bottom cleaning.

Next day we head to the holiday island of Ko Jum. It is a sad sight.  None of the resorts here are especially luxurious but they are all interesting.  All on the beach, some rooms actually built into the trees.  Health and safety in Europe would have a field day! But all deserted and some falling apart. A sad, sad sight. And pity the owners who have lost everything.

We head next to Ko Lanta where we will stay for a while, sightseeing and not watching fire dancing which is cancelled due to the lack of visitors. But the charismatic owner of the Indian Bar where it normally happens makes us very welcome.  The sightseeing is scary.  Amarin driving a motor bike and me as pillion.

Lanta Old Town is a village on the east coast and was the port and commercial centre for Arabic and Chinese trading vessels working between Penang, Phuket and Singapore.

I just could not resist adding the Irish text message…
