Quarantine in Phuket

The Thais began to issue a Special Tourist Visa for long term wealthy visitors to try and give some relief to the decimated tourist industry. This is then extended to cruisers.  A 90 day visa which can be extended twice, so almost nine months I total; 14 days quarantine on arrival, three Covid tests, wear a GPS tracker, have US$ 100,000 of Covid insurance. The Covid tests themselves are not cheap, doctor and nurse drive 15 kilometers to the jetty, board a 500 hp speedboat with one captain, two line handlers and to navy officers to oversee security matters; then aboard, check blood pressure, temperature, sound chest, and the Covid test.  The total cost including the insurance and my agent’s fee (who holds Power of Attorney) is close to 2,000 Sterling.

I decide to go for it, appoint an agent and begin on the tortuous paper work and myriad of other questions and photographs of everything, ventilation system, boat name, me, you name it and I photograph it. I head off and do the run to Phuket in three days instead of the usual four. Days on passage do not count, neither does the day of arrival.  Next day the doctor and nurse do the test, that day does not count either – it is day Zero!  So from start to finish I am alone on the boat for 20 days.

My first two Covid tests are clear, thank goodness. I dread a false positive.

So now seven days to go and the I am  allowed into Boat Lagoon Marina on 31st assuming the third test is negative. Fingers crossed.  Then I am joined by my new crew, Amarin, also known as Aom – all Thai girls have a nickname. She is an accountant and so can look after my money.

What is left of it, that is…
