I head 12 miles east to Wakaya the only Fijian island with a herd of deer; history unknown. There is a resort there - at US$ 2,400 a night a bit more than a backpackers hostel. And a huge house to rent with nine cottages for staff and bodyguards. Advertised as being suitable and safe for royalty I disagree. If I can get ashore anybody can.

Then another 12 miles to Makongai. You were once able to get free housing on this island. But only if you had leprosy. The colony closed in 1969 and it was converted into a marine research station where they breed giant clams and green backed turtles. They also grow and transplant coral. Clever stuff.

20 miles to Koro, quite a big island with moorings so that anchors do not damage the coral. I did not trust the moorings and only stayed overnight as some weather looked like it was coming in and headed to Savusavu which is on the second biggest island of Vanua Levu.
