One of the most unique things we have EVER seen

Mum was happily directing me to the lunch venue she had chosen to take me for my birthday lunch - The Three Choirs Vineyard. Along the way we saw a man off his bike taking pictures of a tree that looked like it was covered in "snow", not only unusual but odd in the middle of a vast stretch of green. We remembered where it was and stopped on our return journey

On closer inspection the "snow" was in fact the silk of caterpillars

In fact thousands and thousands of them

Looking into the bush itself - I'm guessing hawthorn - there was not one single leaf or piece of bark left

If anyone can shed light on this I will as always be very grateful

ALL IN ALL THE STRANGEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN
                     WEIRD AND UNIQUE
NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT IN ALL MY EIGHTY FOUR YEARS - SAID MUM
