We finally arrived at Reunion Island around midday on Friday. As I said in my last post, this should be early enough to check in before marina staff slope off early on a Friday afternoon. We tried to raise the Capitainerie by radio and phone but couldn't get hold of anyone. We were just hovering around, literally 50 metres from the office, wondering what to do, when I made the suggestion that someone could swim ashore to scope things out. Sam volunteered (sort of) & off he went.

Silly me, I had taken into account the early dart on a Friday, but hadn't considered French lunches!! Anyway, the office was open again at 13.30, so we went to the fuel dock to fill up and then moored up on our allocated berth around 15.00. After that, everything went smoothly. I went to check us in, and arranged for immigration to come to the boat in about an hour. We had just about given up on them and about to go for a beer, when to very friendly guys turned up and cleared us in which only took 5 minutes (it can take a day in some of the places that we have been to).

With the formalities over, we went out for a quiet beer - not!! It is tradition for the owner to take the crew out for dinner after each leg, so off we went. We found a really nice bistro (after a few warm up beers) and had a really good meal. We then had a few more beers and then returned to the boat. Paul was sensible and went to bed. Sam, Ant and I weren't. We had bought some small bottles of spirits to bribe people along the way, of maybe to barter for some fish. No bribes and no fishermen meant that these were still on board waiting to be drunk. So we polished these off, put the world to rights and went to bed about 3am. You have to remember that we don't drink on passage, so we had 14 nights to try to make up for - which we did!!

We will start to hit our jobs list tomorrow, then hope to hire a car & go for a tour of the island.
