Having been blown out 2 days running on the kiteboarding - we now have too much wind, we decided to haul anchor and set off for a different view. The wind was so gusty this morning that even the instructor was having problems holding the kite and was flying along about 3 feet out of the water - needless to say, having seen that, there wasn't much point in us even trying!!
The next stop on our list was Trellis Bay on Beef Island, at the eastern end of Tortola.  As this was about 10 miles away, we decided to break the journey at Pussers' Marina Cay on the way.  This is a small island which has quite a nice story attached.  In 1937, Robb and Rodie White, a young American couple in their 20's, bought the island for the grand sum of $60 and built a house at the summit and a cistern to collect water.  The island was entirely uninhabited and is only about 8 acres in total, so life was certainly going to be challenging. Robb White wrote a book called '2 on an isle' about their life there, which was later turned into a film by Sidney Poitier. Their idyllic island life lasted until the second World War broke out and Robb left to join the army.  Neither returned to the island.

This is a photo I pinched off the internet to give you an idea of the size of the island.

One thing they have here which is quite good is a British red phone box which is photographed regularly by Google Earth - if you stand outside for long enough you will be a star on the internet!!

Pusser's, the rum producer bought the island and turned it into a resort, and there is now small hotel, restaurant and bar where we had lunch.  After lunch, due to some fairly heavy squalls, we decided to stay on for a couple of painkiller shooters while the squalls passed.  Although Pusser's is advertised as a sipping rum akin to a single malt, I have been told that all it is good for is making painkillers.
Here is the recipe should you wish to try making your own, the ones here tend to be very heavy on the rum as it is very cheap here, it probably costs less per drink that any single other ingredient!! - Please consume with care - don't say I didn't warn you!!!

Pusser's Rum Cocktail: The Painkiller

The infamous Pusser's Painkiller—the drink we are known for throughout the West Indies, in the U.S. and many parts of Europe!

The Painkiller® is a blend of Pusser's Rum with 4 parts pineapple juice, 1 part cream of coconut and 1 part orange juice served over the rocks with a generous amount of fresh nutmeg on top. You have a choice of numbers 2, 3 or 4, which designate the amount of Pusser's Rum! Cheers!

  • Painkiller #3 ... 3 parts Pusser's Rum
