After three weeks of springrefit most major issues are dealt with and Dora Mac close to being ready for another season. As usual in terms of costs it`s like feeding a nestling with an ever open mouth.
To restore supplies it was time to head for work in Lofoten.
Landing in Bodø we were reminded of the world situation. The airport was crowded with Hercules C-130 trooptransportplanes from the U.S airforce and we had to wait for eight F-18 Hornets fighterjets leaving the airport before our departure. That this is the northern flank of NATO was obvious.
After two years of pandemia and now the biggest war in Europe since WW-II the western world is getting the second slap in the face. The pandemia brought lot`s of suffering but being completely unpredictable also tought humbleness.Regarding war in Europe the major narrative has been that this belongs to history and subsequently military disarmament has been massive in the west.
In my own country Sweden (who is among the more opportunistic western nations) military disarmament has been much more than massive. During the cold war we had the third biggest airforce in the world and with full mobilisation 800.000 troops.
Today we could hopefully mobilize 20.000 soldiers and the airforce consists of around 80 fighterjets. Far to late it has now been decided that the armed forces should be rapidly built up again, but this will of course take time and cost enormous resources.
When the pandemia reached Europe , EU was short of safety equipment and had no stores of masks or safetyequipment for hospital staff (since storage cost money). Moreover Europe is very much dependent on supplylines from especially China and Germany(and therefore Europe) is dependent on gas/oil from Russia.
It`s now hopefully evident that Europe cannot only be an "office" for production elsewhere dependent on a multitude of vulnerable supplylines and Europe must also be able to produce it`s own energy. For the time being nuclear power seems to be the only sensible alternative both from an energy as well as a global warming perspective.
Hopefully we will be represented by wise, non political, non prestigious and pragmatic leaders. That`s the only way out of this very dangerous situation we are in
